Steamy spring cleaning solutions

With spring in the air many people start to plan a spring-cleaning weekend. What may come as a surprise to many is that high temperature steam can make all of those spring-cleaning efforts much easier and more effective. Reliable steam cleaners offer a solution for the big spring-cleaning chores like windows and walls as well as a myriad of everyday household cleaning tasks.

Here are some spring-cleaning steam basics:

1. Remove clutter from the house giving dust mites pet dander and other allergens less places to accumulate. Those that remain will be removed using a variety of attachments that come with a good steam cleaner.

2. Take the cold weather clothes from the closets and drawers and ensure they are clean and dry before storing for the summer giving moths and insects less reason to nest. A fabric steamer will freshen fabrics without chemical detergents, fabric softeners or wrinkle removers.

3. Flip the mattress. This something to do with the change of each season that will help maintain the shape of the mattress. Using steam to sanitize all surfaces of the mattress in the process will help reduce allergies caused from dust mites. High temperature steam also kills bed bugs should they ever come for a visit.

4. Clean the windows inside and out. Now that the sun is shining through them more often, simply remove the tell tale signs of built up winter dirt and grime with the power of steam. Steam makes quick work of freshening blinds and draperies too.

5. Move and clean behind and beneath appliances where grease, grime and dust have been accumulating. High temperature steam will remove grease from the surface of appliances as well as the surfaces they sit on.

Squeaky Clean!

Reliable team at our first ISSA Show

Reliable team at our first ISSA Show

So much hand sanitizer to test, so little time…We’re back in Toronto after 4 days in Orlando at the ISSA (International Sanitation and Supply Association) Interclean Trade Show.  This was our first foray into the realm of janitorial and sanitation supply.  Our EnviroMate PRO certainly held it’s own and some in the green cleaning category.  Steam cleaning was a hot topic and we were in the thick of the action.  Great show!  Wonderful to meet so many new people too.  Special thanks to John Hayes from Enviro-Solutions for sending us the group shot!

On the topic of CLEAN: here’s a link to an interesting article about germ hotspots in the home from yourhome.ca.

Canton Fair

Robert has shared a photo from the China Import and Export Fair (commonly called the Canton Fair) held in Guangzhou, China.  With over 165,000 visitors to the show he’ll be easier for Alice to find if he keeps hanging out with these two characters!  The show has more than 22,000 exhibitors of products ranging from housewares to motorcycles and ABSOLUTELY everything in between. The Canton Fair is sure to offer plenty of creative inspiration for Alice and Robert to bring home to Reliable. Maybe there’s even a pink and yellow iron in the Reliable future if the theme in the photo is any indication…

Steam Kills Bed Bugs

Sure we have been having a lot of fun here at Reliable recently with the Velocity V50 iron, but we’ve also been doing some work on the more serious topic of bed bugs.  It’s no secret that bed bug infestations are on the rise. What may come as a surprise is that high temperature steam will kill bed bugs at all stages of growth. There are numerous treatment options available on the market, however many are complex, sometimes expensive and often use harsh chemicals. Using a steam cleaner to do the job is something that Entomologists specializing in bed bugs recognize as part of an effective treatment plan. Pest Management professionals may also use steam as part of their repertoire, particularly those that prefer to use a more health friendly approach. There are many types of steam cleaners on the market. Look for those with a stainless steel tank in a canister-type model like those from Reliable.

Today’s steam cleaners offer a chemical-free solution for bed bugs and a myriad of everyday household cleaning tasks. It is essential that the machine produces a dry ‘vapor’ steam at a minimum temperature of 120°F or 36°C to be effective in killing bed bugs and properly sanitizing all home surfaces. Since we know more than a thing or two about steam cleaners and we have been getting such a large number of calls recently enquiring about their use in treating bed bugs, it was time to share some suggestions on the topic.

Once you have your steam cleaner these are the basics of removal:

1) Remove clutter from the house giving bed bugs fewer places to hide.

2) Wash and dry clothing and all bedding at the highest temperature and store in plastic bags.

3) Use the attachment for your steam cleaner that has a clip to attach a cloth pad or cover (a good machine will come with such attachments and a few cloths/pads)

4) Begin to steam clean all the surfaces of the room from top to bottom (include curtains, chairs, and finishing with the bed, floor and baseboards.

5) The bed is critical in the process. Be sure to slowly go over every square inch. From the bottom of the posts/frame, to the underside of the box spring. Leave no surface of the bed untouched. The accessories that come with a good steam cleaner should include a high-pressure nozzle. This will assist with getting into the crevices of the bed frame and binding as well as places like base boards.

6) Let everything air dry thoroughly to avoid mold before putting bedding and clothing back in their appropriate places. Wrapping the box spring in heavy plastic sheeting and purchasing a bed bug specific mattress cover can be useful

7) Continue to check regularly for signs of bed bugs.

INTERNATIONAL WINDOW COVERINGS SHOW 2009

Vision '09

This is one of our busiest times of the year as we prepare and finalize the new products that we will showcase.

This will be our second year exhibiting at the International Window Coverings Expo . The Expo is in the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta Georgia from May 13-16th, 2009. Our booth number is #752.

Our booth will be staffed by Mel and Steve Tramell and the good folks at Southeast Sewing Machine Co.

If you are planning on attending the Expo, have a look at the new MSK-755H heavy-duty blindstitch machine. It’s a terrific machine for hemming heavy fabric with our without blackout. And the best part is the price.

Our workroom sewing machines will also be equipped with the new energy saving Sewquiet 4000 servomotor which are a standard feature on all of our machines, or can be purchased as a replacement for your old clutch motor. Our popular i500 and i700 ironing systems will also be on display, including the longer 11.5′ steam hose and cord sets used by drapery workrooms.

And finally, we are be launching the new MSK-373N/DTACK pleat tacker. This is a remarkable new machine, able to tack a 3/4″ pleat, yet is extremely economical. Priced at just $2,499.00. You’ll not want to miss seeing what this machine can tack.

NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW 2009

hardware_09

If it’s March, it must mean we’re in the beginning of our trade show season.

The second big trade show in our season is the very popular National Hardware Show in Las Vegas May 5-9th. This will be our second year at the Hardware Show, and if last year was any indication, this year should be a great show again.

While I have to admit that being a non-gambler, Las Vegas doesn’t hold the same attraction to me as is does for many; I always look forward to a fantastic Thai meal at Lotus of Siam. The food is outstanding, and it’s just minutes away from the Hilton. It’s a great reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the strip, and it’s close enough to the Hilton that we can walk our meal off.

If you are planning on attending the show, please come by to say hello and have a look at some new products for 2009.  Our booth number is 35306.

See you in Vegas!

INTERNATIONAL HOME & HOUSEWARES SHOW 2009

International Home & Housewares Show 2009

It’s official. We’ve got four weeks to go, and we’re off to Chicago for the 2009 Housewares show.

Chicago is one of my favorite places to visit. Whenever we’re there, the first restaurant on our list is always Cafe Iberico. I guess it’s the favorite of a few others as well, as it ’s always packed solid with hungry tapas fans.

On the show front, we’ve got a few surprises this year with some great new products and a brand spanking new booth. As always, you can find us in the Lakeside Building, booth L11033.

Please make sure you come by to say hello. And if you’ve got some favorite Chicago restaurant spots of your own, I’m sure the foodies that are reading this would like to hear your choices. in our comments section.  See you in Chicago.
