SPRING QUILT MARKET IN PITTSBURGH

Spring Quilt Market - Pittsburgh

Spring Quilt Market - Pittsburgh

We’re going to be in Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks for the Spring Quilt Martket, and the only thing I can think of is… “how do I score some hockey tickets”. Hey, it’s been a long walk in the desert in Toronto when it comes to playoff hockey. Five years to be exact. I’m not even sure if they will be in town during the show dates, (May 15-17) but if they are, you can be sure I’m going to do my best to score some tickets. And you got to think they won’t be any more expensive then what the bandits in Toronto ($300.00 plus a ticket!) charge.

Getting back to Pittsburgh, I have heard so many good things about the city. The architecture, the museums, and of course the food. As is typical of our trade show adventures, there is precious little time for exploring, but we should have at least an afternoon after set up to see some sites.

If you are planning on visiting the show, please make sure you drop by to say hello. We’ll have the very exciting new Digital Velocity V100 compact vapor generator iron on display, as well as the latest generation Longboard C60LB 2-in-1 pressing board.

Thank you Ilisa for the detailed review.

NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW - LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AWAY

Hardware Show 2009

Hardware Show 2009

It’s 4º C in Toronto this morning, so the thought that I’ll be in a desert in less than two weeks is a very warming thought.

It will be interesting to see what kind of turnout we get at the National Hardware Show 2009. In spite of assurances from the Houseware Association, attendance was clearly down from last year. There’s a slight feeling of recovery that is in the air, so I remain hopeful that Hardware 2009 will be well attended.

If you are planning on coming to the show, I hope you will drop by our booth. We will be demonstrating the new Digital Velocity V100 compact vapor generator iron, and the new Enviromate E3 and E5 steam cleaners. We’ll also have the latest IronMaven J420 ironing station on display. Lot’s of new stuff. Look forward to seeing you there.

WHY QUALITY MAY STILL MATTER

against_throwayism

Against throwayism.

Once in a while it’s nice to know that I am not going entirely mad. In last Saturday’s Globe and Mail, Karen von Hahn wrote a wonderful article entitled “Purveyors of tat beware: Consumers are onto you”, celebrating the return to a consciousness for quality products in our society.

Why do I fear impending madness? Well, as one of the lone producers of high end (mostly Made in Europe) fabric care and steam cleaning products, our price points are sometimes two, three, four or even five times higher than the typical big box stores. Compare a home ironing board at one of the big box stores for $29.95 to our Made in Italy C60 (The Board™) for $149.00 and you’ll see what I mean. The Board™ is a thing of beauty though. We continue to make our ironing boards mostly by hand, and it has a solidness that is from another era. Still, for most people, the thought of spending that much for an ironing board when the alternatives are so cheap is an almost impossible hurtle.

But as Ms. Hahn writes, “we all grew up with the old adage that I am not rich enough to buy cheap”. Yes our version of an ironing board costs five times more, but it will probably last five times longer. Maybe even a lifetime.

There are times when I really believe there are only a handful of consumers left who appreciates quality. Of course we could produce a $29.95 ironing board as well. But honestly, why even bother? Ms. Hahn directs her readers to a Finnish design company called iittala, who’s website laments our “buy cheap” society in a doctrine they call “Against throwawayism“. It seems there are others out there that understand that “cheap” doesn’t always mean it costs less.

But this poses another good question, and that is, “how do you determine quality”. “Brand, Price”? Tricky stuff to be sure. I can’t say I really know the answer. Many of us have bought expensive items and been disappointed, I know I have.

The high level of marketing has made it almost impossible to know which brands to trust. As a manufacturer, I know we are only as good as our product quality. I hear of 10-20% returns for defective or deficient merchandise at mass retail and I shake my head in disbelief. I wonder if this can be sustainable Maybe the bigger question is should it be sustainable?

THE NEW MSK-373N/DTACK DRAPERY TACKER

 msk-373n_dtack

If you run a drapery workroom, you know how much of a challenge sewing tacks can be. With thicknesses ranging up to 3/4″ thick, most machines are simply not designed for this type of task.

This is why we are so pleased to introduce the new MSK-373N/DTACK drapery tacker. Our engineers have reconfigured our standard MSK-373N chainstitch machine to sew the real life, everyday types of thicknesses that workrooms use.

We marry the new MSK-373N/DTACK with our Sewquiet 4000 DC servomotor. After all, when you’ve got the best drapery tacker in the industry, you want to have the best DC servomotor driving it as well.

WE’RE IN GQ MAGAZINE

gq

GQ Magazine April 2009

I was delighted to pick up this months GQ Magazine (okay, having images of Kim Kardashian didn’t hurt) to discover a well thought out article on the joys of ironing.Yes, I said ironing.

Seems that the modern male might be taught a thing or two about looking after their most precious Armani’s and Hugo Bosses. The article, written by Mark Healy, hits the nail right on the head, “beyond the environmental factors, the real reason you should be washing and ironing your shirts is that they’re your shirts”. Hallelujah!

Okay, as an iron manufacturer we’re a little biased (a review of our Digital Velocity V95 is on the same page) but if I can take my company hat off for a minute, doesn’t it make sense that ironing should join other movements du jour, like the slow cooking sensation? Isn’t it time to take back those every day tasks that our pre-recession brains deemed as too petty. Maybe we can learn something from these tough times after all.

Heck, Mr. Healy even suggests ironing while watching the football game. Throw in a beer or two and I’m sure we could enlist some willing guys.

NEW ACCESSORIES FOR C81 AND C88 ACTIVE IRONING BOARDS

New Ironing Board Accessories

For years now we’ve been asked why we didn’t offer a sleeve board for our popular C81 and C88 home/professional active ironing boards. So when we finally got around to designing one, we figured we would go one step further and add an optional bottle holder for all those customers that insist on using a gravity feed iron (why you would want to use a gravity iron over a steam boiler system is still beyond me, but I digress).

So now we have 3 terrific options. The sleeve board and bracket (#C8SH), the bottle holder and bracket (#C8BH), and one that includes both accessories (#C8SBH). I really love what we’ve done with the sleeve board. It was very important to design a sleeve board that would be convenient to use, and move away when not required (plus we’ve used a terrific quality cover/pad set). The combination makes great sense as well for gravity iron owners. When you compare the package with our competition, ours is priced  hundreds of dollars less, and provides in my opinion, a superior product. Plus we have cETLus approval on both our C81 and C88 active ironing boards.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING SAYS WE’RE #2

Good Housekeeping April 2009

Good Housekeeping April 2009

I’m a pretty competitive guy by nature. So when Good Housekeeping magazine came out last week, and listed us as the #2 iron, my first thought was, “We’re not #1?”.

After a few minutes I realized what an accomplishment being #2 is. The Digital Velocity V95 is our first go at the consumer iron market. After years of making commercial grade ironing products, the V95 was a bit of a leap of faith for us.

So while being #1 would have been great, I can say that being #2 is pretty cool too. The article goes on to say that the V95 (which costs $50.00 less than the #1 rated iron) was a “Close second in performance and it was best at smoothing wrinkles from silk and wool”. On their website, the full review says “If you need it, Reliable also offered the most helpful customer service of all the companies we called”.

I’ll take that any day.
